Core Values - a community, a family, an organization has a culture. Cultures can either be shaped intentionally or accidentally. We want to make sure we intentionally shape a culture that reflects our values as Christ followers. As Christians, we view certain cultures to be superior than others, for example:
We established and discussed 5 Core Values that will, hopefully, inform our behaviors which in turn will shape our culture in CG community. The bigger goal is for us to practice this everywhere we go, not only in the CG circle. I actually was able to get help in making a cube with each of these core values etched on the sides to serve as a reminder (see picture attachment). These 5 Values are what we DT CG leaders came up with. These are not original and there are probably better ones but these are what we think as important! I'd love to hear what you think or if we can make it better =).
Below is the material that we discussed on our first meeting, 6/20/2015.
Session 2 – CORE VALUES
Authentic Relationships
Question: Who am I building authentic relationships with?
Principles: This is the word that we want to be identified with. Relational.
"Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
People care for people they know well.
Behavior Examples: "How is school? How is work?"
"Let's have lunch"
Collaboration
Q: Who have I helped recently? Am I going to need help?
P: Reward people who help you, have done a good job. What is rewarded is repeated.
Pride is barrier to asking for help.
BE: “Is there anything that I can do to help?”
"Hey I'm going to have a problem doing ... can you help me with ... ?"
"Thank you"
Humility
Q: What have I learned recently?
P: “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity.
Leader is not more important, leader is more responsible.
We are not to compete with one another, but to complete one another.
I am not here to fill your cup, but to empty my cup.
BE: "You might be right, I've never thought about it that way"
"I don't understand either man, but let's figure it out"
Ownership
Q: Have I given my best?
P: Orchestrate and evaluate. Because somebody somewhere is already doing it!
BE: "Is there something that I can do better in my sharing"
"Hey, I think we need to do better with starting on time"
Integrity
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
P: Integrity is choosing to do what is right, even when it is hard.
You can be a leader, but without integrity you won't be a leader worth following.
Celebrate integrity.
BE: "I'm sorry but I can't do that"
“Hey, I was almost tempted to … but by the grace of God, I was able to say no“
Below are points that came up during our discussion:
1. Leaders have a tendency to think too highly of themselves. We are to remember that we are simply people that God uses for His glory. Be humble.
2. Pride is the barrier to asking for help.
3. True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
4. Do our best to not pry into someone else's absence from CG or church. Instead, celebrate their return.
- a culture of helping one another is superior to a culture of only looking to one's own interest,
- humility is superior to pride, and
- life of integrity is superior to life of pretentiousness.
